Service-Learning and Violence Prevention in Schools
"In light of the recent tragedies at the school on Red Lake Indian
reservation,
the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse would like to
draw your
attention to these materials on the topic of using
service-learning as a tool to
help reduce and prevent violence in
schools and communities...
Service-learning provides both the social structure and the emotional
support
that can help counter youth violence. It helps young people
develop
academically, socially and emotionally. It also provides an
important way for
young people to connect with their communities by
giving them a stake in
creating positive changes where they live." (ECS
Issue Paper, 1999).
