Survey Reveals Most Are Unaware of Media Ownership Debate
Nearly three-quarters of Americans have heard "nothing at all" about the
current debate on media ownership, according to results of a recent poll by
the Project for Excellence in Journalism and the Pew Research Center for the
People and the Press. The Federal Communications Commission is
considering dramatic changes to rules governing corporation ownership of
media outlets, with the final decision expected in May.

Research Identifies Critical Actions to Sustain Ed Tech
"The Sustainability Challenge: Taking Ed-Tech to the Next Level" is a new
report from the Benton Foundation and EDC/Center for Children and
Technology, edited by Norris Dickard. The authors promote ten actions
necessary to sustain technology infrastructure in schools and make

Public Regards Internet as Important Educational Tool
A UCLA study has found that Americans increasingly consider the Internet a
valuable information source, with a striking 97 percent of 12- to 18-year
olds, and the vast majority of adults, using the Internet. Survey
respondents have also grown more skeptical of online content, leading
educators to emphasize the need for teaching learners how to evaluate as
well as to search for information.

Growth in After-School Programs and Their Impact" by Rob Hollister

Case Studies in Youth Development at the State and Local Level
The February issue of Youth Today features two stories on the ways that
officials and agencies are striving to meet the needs of youth. "Youth
Development: It's the Law" tells how Connecticut has come to mandate
capacity building and cross-agency collaboration as part of a state-wide
youth development initiative. "Rural Youth Workers Suppress Yawning
Gaps" shares examples of programs based at school, home, church, and
reservation that are overcoming obstacles to engage rural youth.

Illinois After-School Initiative Task Force Report
Charged with studying the state of afterschool in Illinois and developing a
strategic plan, the 2002 Task Force has produced a report that likely has
relevance for policymakers, educators, and program directors around the
country. Among its findings, the Task Force asserts that staff is "perhaps
