Youth Media Learning Network Director Joins the Team
We're thrilled to share the news that effective this week, Tim Dorsey has joined
our team here at EDC as Project Director of the new Youth Media Learning
Network (YMLN). YMLN is our new capacity building and professional development
initiative, launched in partnership with Educational Video Center (EVC) in New
York, intended to strengthen the practice and expand the reach of youth media.
Tim is formerly the Managing Director at EVC (http://www.evc.org) and brings
a great deal of project management and youth media expertise to this new effort.
The project is a two-year pilot effort with initial funding from Open Society
Institute and Kellogg Foundation. We'll continue to keep you posted regarding
opportunities for professional development available through the Network.

'Augmented reality' helps kids learn
"Researchers at Harvard, MIT, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison have
developed a project that uses 'augmented reality' to teach students math and
literacy skills. The project involves teams of students gathering data on handheld
computers to explain why aliens have landed, and in the process students
'interview' virtual characters they encounter at certain GPS hot spots. The
researchers say the project holds great potential for engaging students and
teaching high-level skills."

NEA Grants - Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth
"This program offers funding for projects that help children and youth acquire
knowledge and understanding of and skills in the arts. Projects must provide
participatory learning and engage students with skilled artists, teachers, and
excellent art. Funded projects apply national or state arts education standards."

Awards for Youth Community Service
"The Hitachi Foundation is sponsoring the Yoshiyama Awards for Exemplary
Service to the Community, which honors up to ten high school seniors for their
community service. Afterschool providers may nominate students. Those
selected will be awarded up to $5,000 each over two years." Deadline: April 2.

New Ways to Work Resources for Engaging and Serving Youth
New Ways to Work, an organization that cultivates partnerships across schools,
community organizations, business, education, government agencies, offers a
library of free resources on youth development and youth leadership. Among

The Impact of After-School Programs that Promote Personal and Social Skills
"More than 7 million children in the United States are without adult supervision for
some period of time after school. Studies show that youth benefit from structured
activities with opportunities for positive interaction with adults. The Collaborative
for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning recently posted a review of analytic
research about the impact on children's social and emotional development and
school success."

Student Documentary Competition
"C-SPAN StudentCam is an annual documentary competition that invites students
to identify a current political topic of interest and produce a short (up to ten
minute) video documentary that creatively explores an issue while integrating
C-SPAN programming. Maximum Award: $3,000 in digital equipment for school.
Eligibility: individual or teams of students grades 6-8 or grades 9- 12; Deadline:
March 30, 2007."

Action! Making Videos & Movies
To help you facilitate a video documentary project for the C-SPAN competition
or another purpose/audience, here's a 15-page project guide on "storytelling,
editing, planning, lighting, camera handling, making titles, recording sound, as
well as showing and reviewing your production." This is one of many useful
curriculum resources and "publications that have been created by Wisconsin
4-H and are available for viewing, printing and downloading free of charge."
