"Feelings" from Perry School, Washington, D.C



CENTER: Perry School Networked Learning Center

LOCATION: Washington, DC

OBJECTIVE: Students will explore feelings by first identifying what feelings are, listing different feelings, and making facial expressions that accompany those feelings. Students will also reflect on these emotions by writing about what makes them feel this way.

MATERIALS:
    Newsprint
    Markers, Gel Pens
    Diskettes
    Dark Colored Construction Paper
    Glue
    Scissors
    Glossy Paper

SOFTWARE/EQUPMENT USED:
    Adobe Photoshop
    Digital Camera

LENGTH OF TIME: 2 days (120 min)

PROCEDURES:

I. Community Builder (20 min)

  • Zoom
  • Read "Happy To Be Nappy"

II. Visual Mapping (15 min)

  • What are feelings?
  • List different feelings.
  • Practice making feeling faces
  • Select 4 feelings to take pictures of.

III. Model taking pictures (10 min)

  • Instructor ‚ Student
  • Inserting Diskettes
  • Taking pictures
  • Removing diskettes
  • Passing camera
  • Student will repeat

IV. Students will take "Feelings" Pictures (15 min)

V. Debrief

Day 2

I. Community Builder (10 min)

  • Variation of ZOOM, making emotional faces

II. Instructor will model using Adobe Photoshop (10 min)

  • Importing pictures from A:\drive.
  • Change image size to 7 in. wide.
  • Change to grayscale.
  • Print picture.
  • Save picture.

III. Student will model using Adobe Photoshop. (5 min)

IV. Students will work on "Feeling" Pictures. (20 min)

V. Instructor will model: (5 min)

  • Writing a sentence about the emotion in the picture at the bottom of the dark construction paper using a gel pen. (For better results use black paper.)
  • Cutting out the picture.
  • Gluing the picture in the center of the black construction paper.

VI. Students will repeat these steps until all their feeling pictures have been completed.

VII. Students will place work on display.
