Procedure:
Day 1
PreparationHave newsprint and markers already set up.
I. Community Builder
Students will play Story, Story. Story, Story is lead by the instructor. The children will collectively create a story by taking over where the previous student left off. For example, the instructor will lead, "Once upon a time in a far away land, a young girl". Then he/she points to a student to add input to the story. This student continues until the instructor says, STOP! And the next student continues until we end the story.
II. Read-a-Loud
Read half of a book. We read "Jamaica Louise James". Instructor leads discussion on what the book was about.
III. Visual Map
- Students gather around a table that has a sheet of newsprint and markers on it.
- Instructor writes "book" in the center of the newsprint and then asks, "If we wrote a book, what would it be about?" Instructor takes a suggestion and writes it down.
- As the children begin sharing answers he hands markers to them to record their ponderings. If you are working with a large group, team the students up and move them to other tables.
- Students will share possible book themes.
- In groups students will select 2 possible themes for class book.
- Groups will submit the themes that they have chosen and the class will vote.
IV. Elements of Pages in a Book
- Instructor will open to a page in the book that was read, "Jamaica Louise James".
- Instructor then probes students to share what belongs on each page in a book; every page must include a sentence, a picture, a page number and maybe something else special that they would like to include in their book.
V. Draft of page
- Instructor will model creating a draft page. Instructor will write a sentence about the theme selected by the class.
- Then instructor will illustrate the page.
- Then add a page number.
- Students will return to their seats and get a sheet of white paper to create their draft page. Instructor will issue everyone a page number.
