In
September 2002, 18 youth from Community Technology Centers
(CTCs) around the United States were chosen for the second
annual AT&T Young Leaders Program. YouthLearn was proud
to take part in this important effort to train the community
leaders of tomorrow. The kick-off was a weekend leadership
conference in Washington, DC, where each Young Leader
was accompanied by a Coach from their CTC. The Young Leaders
shared their expertise as active participants in their
CTCs and learned skills to make an impact in their broader
communities. In parallel sessions, the Coaches reviewed
best practices in project-based learning and shared their
expertise on youth development strategies. The training
was co-facilitated by YouthLearn, the America Connects
Consortium and YouthNOISE, a dynamic online community
for youth activists. The Young Leaders, supported in their
home communities by their Coaches, address
a community issue chosen by the youth themselves. Collectively,
they tackle issues such as home access to computers,
high school drop out, workforce development, AIDS awareness,
and racial profiling. Coaches provide resources
and guidance as the Young Leaders use technology to address
and expand the impact of their efforts.
