Chicago
Project-Based Learning Partnership
In 2002-03,
YouthLearn worked with Chicago's Metropolitan Planning Council
and Street-Level Youth Media to develop a pilot peer-mentoring
program for local youth development agencies. Using the YouthLearn
Guide and methodology as a roadmap for training, Street-Level
instructors worked with youth practitioners from three community
centers to model new after-school curriculum driven by project-based
learning techniques. Street-Level designed an innovative new
program module that each program site adapted to suit their
specific needs. "Rendering Community" explores community
assets and youth perspectives using collage as a framing device.
Trainee sites include The Center for New Horizons and Chicago
Commons. YouthLearn continues to consult on the project, offering
evaluation resources and advice for the Street-Level team.
The partnership was spearheaded by Metropolitan Planning Council
through the support of the Polk Bros. Foundation.
